Fresh from the success of Magpie Dance’s series of Summer performances, we would like to congratulate all the brilliant dancers from Highfliers, Magpie’s Adult Group and Saturday Youth Group Technique for their dedication and extraordinary performances throughout June and July 2016. We welcomed over 1700 audience members from around the country, reaching out to more people than ever before!

The season launched with Magpie’s professional training company, Highfliers, who performed at the Candoco Anniversary Performance in Greenwich on Saturday 18th June, swiftly followed by a run of shows at Northern Ballet’s Expressions 2016 in Leeds, an Inclusive Dance Double Bill with Confidance at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury and Sadler’s Wells Big Dance at the Baylis to celebrate 10 years of Big Dance. This year, Highfliers were delighted to invite Ben Duke, of Lost Dog Dance to choreograph an original work on the company called “There Were Definitely Swans”. In a bare rehearsal space, 6 performers try and re-stage Swan Lake.  As they piece it together, reality and fiction become confused, emotions run high and while the traditional choreography is nowhere to be seen, Swan Lake comes to life in the most unique of settings. Highfliers charmed the audience members by filling each theatre with laughter as well capturing heart felt emotion, all within one piece and received a standing ovation at the Gulbenkian Theatre.

‘Brilliant Performances from @Confidence_1 and @MagpieDance at the Gulbenkian tonight.’ – @BethAJames

‘It was so great to share the stage with these amazing and talented people @MagpieDance #Highfliers’ – @CandocoYD

Magpie’s Adult Group debuted their new piece ‘Gimme a Break!’ in collaboration with Bea Pemberton from Complicite Theatre Company at the Churchill Theatre on Saturday 9th July as part of Big Dance. The energetic dancers invited the audiences to escape city life and join them on a holiday of a lifetime!

Our final show of the summer was performed by Magpie’s Saturday Youth Group Technique at The Broadway Theatre as part of Positive Vibez, ‘Take It to the Stage’ for one night only on Saturday 23rd July. The group performed an adaptation of their piece ‘Tilt’, a collage of movement phrases and duets. This compelling performance draws on linear techniques such as Merce Cunningham’s. The show opened by our dancers, highlighted the exceptional talents of young people in the performing arts industry.

‘First act of the night was absolutely stunning and full of emotion’ @PositiveViberz

It has been an extraordinary experience for Magpie Dance to go on tour this Summer 2016. We would like to thank firstly our amazing dancers and their families, plus all the partners from each event, our funders and donors, and especially our fantastic facilitators, staff, visiting artists and volunteers that made this summer such a triumph.
